The NYT reports that 132 mayors and municipalities have endorsed the goals of the Kyoto Protocol at the local level. They've got their work cut out for them when it comes to other environmental goals like reducing garbage output, though. Maybe the Japanese recycling nazis can teach us a thing or two. Here's the clincher, from the Republican mayor of Bellevue, Nebraska:
Mr. Ryan described himself as a strong Bush supporter, but said he felt that the president's approach to global warming should be more like his approach to terrorism.
"You've got to ask, 'Is it remotely possible that there is a threat?' " he said. "If the answer is yes, you've got to act now."
I think this is the approach environmentalists should take. That mountain of conclusive scientific evidence on global warming? Bush has seen it and ignored it. But putting the reduction of greenhouse emissions on the same level as anti-terrorism? That'll get some attention.
