Countdown to a NYC transit strike...
Standing with the TWU, 1199 prez Dennis Rivera was quoted in the Daily News saying the strike will be a "fight for every worker in New York, union and nonunion." Look, Peter Kalikow's a jerk and MTA management deserves to get its ass whupped, but the unions should really come off their high horse. The MTA negotiations are about the transit workers, who are the only people who will walk away from this with any kind of pay hike. I don't see Rivera, TWU boss Roger Toussaint, or PBA boss Pat Lynch coming to the aid of the thousands of restaurant workers, garment workers, building janitors, or retail workers who'll have to double their commute time just to get to work, all because transit won't do its job.
